The ceilings are baltic pine, and at some stage they have had shellac put on them, with a stain in the shellac.
To make sure the stain doesn't bleed through when you paint over it, a special undercoat is required. It's a sealer & undercoat in one . . . and is called CoverStain.
Once the CoverStain is on, and dry, the next step is to apply a paintable Silicone to any gaps between the boards. When the roof was being replaced, we noticed we could see through the ceiling at a number of places, and we have 110 year old dust drifting down.
